BPMN: camunda coaches the Federal Ministry of Finance and the MATERNA GmbH

November 18 2011 by Robert Gimbel · 1 Comment

Finally we camunda business people have a ‚success story‘, too. In this case it is about a BPMN modelling project. In the context of the Modernised Customs Code, we modelled the export processes together with the German Federal Ministry of Finance and MATERNA GmbH. Camunda was responsible for all questions around BPMN.

Most models were independently modelled by the employees of both enterprises after the first workshops. It was remarkable that even the most complex models were discussed in joint workshops with all participants. Lawyers, representatives of the business side as well as IT specialists were able to clarify their questions together – a very useful approach but unfortunately far too seldom used in practice.

BPMN bei der T-Systems MMS

September 22 2011 by Jakob Freund · 1 Comment

Maybe some of you remember that I was invited to a conference in Chile last year. Professor Bernhard Hitpass, who invited us there, now translated our German BPMN book into Spanish! You can already order it online via Amazon. We already received our first copies so I can start practicing my Spanish :-) But I am really happy that we can share more about our thoughts about BPMN with all the Spanish speaking folks out there!

“Cool BPMN-Trainer”

Robert Gimbel, cool BPMN-Trainer

Robert Gimbel, certified 'cool BPMN-Trainer'

We provide quite a lot of customers with BPMN onsite-trainings these days. And sometimes, when our customer’s policies allow it, we ask for a nice reference quote afterwards. The nicest quote we got now comes from the “Schweizer Mobiliar Versicherung”, an insurance company in Switzerland: They testify that we have sent them a “cool Trainer” :-) Unfortunately I have not been there personally, so I have to live with the headache that I am probably not quite as cool as Robert Gimbel from our team. But anyway, a bit of that glory may shine down on the rest of us at Camunda. And hey, since even Robert’s new born son is already familiar with BPMN, I think his new certification as “cool BPMN-Trainer” won’t surprise anyone ;-)

Our BPMN 2.0 training has been a real success. The choice of subjects as well as the answers to our questions was very flexible and competently conveyed. The trainer was cool and had much practical knowledge; he didn’t conceal any problems and didn’t try to sell BPMN as the world formula. The documents were significant without being dull. The workshop was fun and we learned a lot for our daily work.

Willy and BPMN

Willy and BPMN

BPMN it too complicated for the business? Nonsense! See the prove on Willy, Roberts brand new son. Best wishes from the whole camunda team to Willy and his parents. But we are sure that nothing can happen, since all important processes are perfectly described now :-)

P.S: And camunda has an business plan B now…

Successful Process Automation with Open Source and BPMN

March 09 2011 by Jakob Freund · Leave a reply

It took a while, but now we also have one of those fancy “success stories”. Until now, we just did not have the time for such kind of things. But now it’s done, and if you want to, you can learn about a BPM-project we realized in 2010 for the German 1&1 Internet AG (Big Telco Provider). This project was about automating a core process with the open source process engine JBoss jBPM, including process modeling in BPMN, so I hope it’s interesting for you.

BPMN 2.0 Handbook – Best Practice Guidelines

February 03 2011 by Jakob Freund · 2 Comments · German version

bpmn_books

In December, the BPMN 2.0 Handbook has been published by WfMC. It contains a lot of interesting articles about using BPMN in practice, and several authors participated directly in the development of BPMN 2.0. We also contributed an article about Modeling Guidelines for process modeling with BPMN. It’s a selection of best practice approaches, based on our BPMN project experiences of the last 4 years. Of course, a complete Guidelines-Set is much more comprehensive, but the article is meant to provide an idea of the questions you have to answer when introducing BPMN in your organization, and it hopefully clarifies that these questions go far beyond the question, which BPMN-symbols you want to leave out ;-)

Finally: BPMN 2.0 officially released

January 22 2011 by Jakob Freund · 10 Comments · German version

release

It took a while, but now the official current version of the global standard for process modeling is called “BPMN 2.0″:

Now this is great news! Not only for software products already supporting BPMN 2.0 (e.g. Activiti and Signavio), but also for everyone who is applying BPMN in practice. I think 2011 is going to be a rather interesting year for Business Process Management :-) .

camunda on tour – successful start in Hamburg

Hamburg listening to Activiti

Activiti@Hamburg

Yesterday I gave a talk at the Java User Group Hamburg about Activiti and BPMN 2.0. The amount of people interested was amazing (I counted over 100), even if the room was too small for this. But somehow we all managed to survive the bad air :-) Further down I linked the slides (sorry, they are in German), but a big part of the presentation was a live demo. If you missed it, I will put a Screencast of the talk online soon (but again sorry: the talk was in German). And there are still opportunities to visit this talk, since I continue the tour with that talk over Germany.
